Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew stuns World number 1 Viktor in first round of world Championship – Loh Kean Yew pulls off the biggest upset in the first round of the World Championships by dumping hot favourite and Olympic Games champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
Kean Yew defeated the second seed Axelsen 14-21, 21-9, 21-6 in 54 minutes in Huelva, Spain on Monday to set up a second round meeting with Luka Wraber of Austria.
It was Kean Yew’s first win in five meetings against the reigning world No. 1. His two recent defeats this year was in the first round of the Denmark Open in Odense and the final of the Indonesian Open in Bali.
“I’m delighted to finally beat Viktor after five tries. I just kept trying and never stopped believing. It has been a hectic end to the season for all of us. Viktor is a superb player and he will come back even stronger, while I need to recover well and stay focused to try and go as far as I can.”
